The Black Lion Hotel Roars Back to Life in Ellesmere

Published on Wednesday December 17th, 2025

After several years of closure, one of Ellesmere’s most historic landmarks – The Black Lion Hotel – reopened its doors in Spring 2025, bringing new energy and excitement to the heart of this picturesque Shropshire town.

A Historic Gem Restored

The Black Lion is a Grade II listed coaching inn on Scotland Street, with origins believed to date back to the Tudor period. Its timber-framed frontage and traditional architecture have long been part of Ellesmere’s charm, standing as a reminder of the town’s rich heritage.

After closing in 2022 and facing the challenges of a fire the following year, the future of the inn looked uncertain. Thankfully, new owners Valiant Pubs stepped in to lovingly restore the building, carefully blending historic features with a fresh, contemporary feel, and of course, log fires for the colder months.

A Warm Welcome Awaits

Reopened in spring 2025, The Black Lion is once again a vibrant hub for locals and visitors alike. Inside, the transformation is striking – from its inviting bar, cosy Lion’s Den and elegant restaurant to its newly refurbished function room, every space has been thoughtfully designed to combine comfort and character.

The atmosphere is welcoming and relaxed, making it the perfect place to unwind after exploring Ellesmere’s scenic surroundings, including The Mere and nearby canal walks.

Dining at The Black Lion

The Black Lion serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner every day. Guests can enjoy a delicious menu showcasing pub classics, local produce, and freshly prepared dishes – ideal for everything from hearty morning starts to leisurely evening meals.

The spacious beer garden offers a lovely spot for al fresco dining and drinks during warmer months, while the first-floor function room provides an attractive setting for celebrations, events, meetings and gatherings.

A Bright Future

The reopening marks the first phase of the hotel’s restoration, with the next stage focusing on transforming the upper floors beautiful guest bedrooms. Once complete, The Black Lion will offer a full hotel experience, allowing visitors to stay overnight and soak up the charm of Ellesmere at their leisure.

For now, the pub and restaurant are already proving to be a wonderful addition to the town – a blend of history, hospitality, and Shropshire warmth that makes The Black Lion a must-visit destination.
